Leire graduated from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in Spain with a Bachelors in Pharmacy. In 2017, she started her PhD in pharmacology with the Cellular and Molecular Neuropharmacology group led by Prof. Joan Sallés. The principal aim of her PhD is to study the effect of ligand-receptor kinetics and membrane lipid composition, particularly cholesterol, on GPCR signalling, focusing on cannabinoid receptors.

As part of her PhD, Leire is visiting the Veprintsev lab to collaborate with the group and gain experience in new techniques that are relevant to her project, for example, Time-Resolved Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (TR-FRET) based assays to study ligand-receptor kinetics
